Prerequisites Student should be able to read complex chapter books and have a solid understanding of computer Minecraft. The $26.95 computer Minecraft.net game is required prior to enrolling in a course. NOTE: If you have a Windows 10 computer, please be sure to buy the Computer Version, not the Windows 10 Version of Minecraft. 

Time Spent:  Your student will spend approximately 4 hours per week on their assigned work and Minecraft gameplay.

2017-18 Session Calendar

The first week of each session is set aside for orientation. During this time, new students will be taught how to use the program and will complete several exciting projects to test their new skills. The remaining portion of the course will provide several activities and learning experiences each week to complete on your own timeline.

Session 2:    10/30 – 12/15
Session 3:    1/8 – 2/23
Session 4:    2/25 – 4/13
Session 5:    4/16 – 6/1

Program Overview

Each self-paced course includes the following:

  • “Getting Started” week that includes an orientation lesson and practice Minecraft assignment
  • six academic units designed to be completed at a rate of one per week
  • two or more live events per week (optional)
  • access to our Minecraft server with weekly Minecraft builds that solidify your learning
  • 24/7 phone support and in-game staff and moderators

Each week your student will have from Monday to Friday night to complete 4 assignments:

  • Learn It – This is a learning activity that is made up of a combination of reading and videos.  In many of the classes, an optional hands-on activity is also included in this section.  This activity should take 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
  • Quiz – The quiz is multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, and matching.  There are 10 to 20 questions. The system will grade your quiz on submission.  This activity should take 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
  • Project in Minecraft – This project is designed for completion on our Multiplayer Minecraft server. Projects vary from builds to adventures to experiments, depending on the topic of study.  This activity should take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
  • Redstone Project – This is an optional Minecraft assignment.  A redstone tutorial will be provided for a machine that compliments the Minecraft project each week.  This activity should take 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Cost

Prices are based on enrolling in one 6-week course.  We suggest that students in this age group take a maximum of 3 courses per session.

Our courses are arranged into series. Each series will have 4 to 6 courses and the series is designed to take a full academic year. You are welcome to start at the beginning of a series or pick and choose the individual courses that are appropriate for your student.

5th Grade Math Series

Each week your student will learn one or more new concepts and then practice what they have learned in Splash Math.  This is a full program that you purchase in 6 week increments.  You may start in any session, but must start with course 1 in the series.  Once the math concepts are mastered, your student will apply what they have learned in the Minecraft world.  PLEASE NOTE that you must have an iPad and will need to purchase the Splash Math App from the App Store for an additional $9.95.

Redstone Designers Series

What is redstone?  How can it be used? What does it have to do with math, engineering, and the real world? This series will start with learning the basic redstone components and will move up to some really exciting redstone machines that will amaze your friends! Once you have mastered the basics, you can move on to the next level and begin designing your own redstone contraptions. Beyond that, begin to learn Binary Math, the language of computers, and put it to work for you.

Life Science Series

Vertebrates and invertebrates, reptiles and plants, insects that buzz in your ear; the world is full of an amazing diversity of life. Join us as we celebrate this diversity in the beginning of this series. Next, things will get creepy and crawly as you grab your magnifying glass and investigate the world of insects. Once the bugs have been discovered, you will find out that there is a science to boogers and you are going to find out what it is.  If that doesn’t gross you out, then you are welcome to continue on to the eyes, ears, and your very own blood for a fascinating look inside the human body.

Our World Science Series

What do you know of creatures as big as your house? In this series you will kick off your exploration with a look back to the age of dinosaurs. Next, you will be challenged to create fantastic inventions that illustrate the concepts of  gravity, acceleration, energy sources, and electricity using only common household items. After that you will find out that experimentation is fun, but when you are a scientist you also need to worry about precision, accuracy, and documentation. Finally, we will contemplate the idea that the world of energy is under constant study as scientists look for better ways to power our world.
